What is included in an eye exam?
All comprehensive eye exams are performed by Ophthalmologists or Optometrists. The exam also helps the Doctor in detecting such things as: high blood pressure, diabetes, and retinal and corneal disorders.
What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism usually occurs when the front surface of the eye, (the cornea), has an irregular curvature. Astigmatism is one of a group of eye conditions known as refractive errors. Refractive errors cause a disturbance in the way that light rays are focused within the eye. Astigmatism often occurs with nearsightedness and farsightedness. These are conditions that also result from refractive errors. Astigmatism means that there is a variation or disturbance in the shape of the cornea.
What is nearsightedness?
In nearsightedness, (myopia), vision is better up close than at a distance.
What is farsightedness?
In farsightedness, (hyperopia), vision is often better at a distance than up close (it may be blurry both at a distance and up close).
What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is the inability to focus on and clearly see objects that are at a normal reading distance or closer. It affects most people over the age of 40. Essentially, one needs reading glasses.
What is a polarized lens?
Polarized lenses are used in sunglasses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces like the surface of water or the hood of a car.
What is anti-glare coating?
Anti-glare coatings are applied to the surface of glasses to prevent or reduce the effect of glare when seeing under certain light conditions. They help you to see better by reducing extra light.
What are progressive lenses?
Progressive lenses have a smooth, seamless progression of lens powers for clear vision at all distances.
What is Crizal? What is Crizal-Alizee?
This is a brand name anti glare coating for lenses. It is more durable than regular anti-glare coating and leaves less smudges on the lenses. The company provides a one year warranty on this product.
What are photochromic (transitions) lenses?
Photochromic lenses are lenses that darken at exposure to sunlight or UV rays. Once the UV is removed (e.g. by walking indoors), the lenses will gradually return to their clear state.
What is the difference between hard and soft contact lenses?
The main difference between a soft and a hard contact lens is that the soft lens will be able to breathe and let the air and oxygen pass through, providing a healthier environment for your eyes.
What is a contact lens fitting?
A contact lens fitting involves special measurements of the curvature of the front surface of your eye with an instrument called a keratometer. This gives your doctor a starting point for determining the proper curve and size for your contact lenses. (There are many to choose from.) Contact lenses that are too flat or too steep for the shape of your eyes will be uncomfortable and/or can cause damage to the front surface of the eye, the cornea.
What are Varilux lenses?
These lenses provide a greater range of vision than generic progressive lenses.
What are digital lenses?
This is the newest progressive lens market. It is a high quality lens and minimizes distortion. It is great for the first-time progressive lens wearer and also works very well on small frames.
What are Toric lenses? (contact lenses for astigmatism, astigmatic lenses).
These are lenses to help correct astigmatism. Toric lenses have two powers in them, created with curvatures at different angles (one for astigmatism, the other for either myopia or hyperopia). There is also a mechanism to keep the contact lens relatively stable on the eye when you blink or look around. To provide crisp vision, toric contact lenses cannot rotate on your eye.
What is the average time for glasses to be made?
Turnaround time is from 2 days up to a week, depending on the prescription and what kind of lens you are requesting.
