Have you had enough of running around to those large, impersonal warehouse type eyeglass places? Would you like to go to a store where the staff actually remembers your name? Maybe it’s time to try My Optician Eye Care Centers, a locally owned business, with three NYC locations, working hard to see that your eye care needs are met and that your business and hard-earned money stays in the community. For the past 10 years, we have been in business in Brooklyn and downtown in Manhattan’s Financial District to serve you, our clients. My Optician is your one-stop solution. Need an eye exam? We offer comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting (your visit will include a follow-up visit and don’t worry if you don’t know how to put the lenses in, our trained staff will walk you through the process), and medical eye exams. We have NY State licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists on staff to perform eye exams. For your convenience, we also have late evening and weekend appointments. As well as a huge inventory of eyeglasses our stores carry current sunglasses selection. We offer a full collection of eyeglasses frames provided by such insurance plans as Davis Vision and Spectera. Once you chose the eyeglasses frame you like, it’s time for the lenses. There are different types of lenses and they come in different materials. The doctor will advise you what type of lenses you need at your eye exam. The eyeglass lenses could be for distance (seeing far), near vision (seeing close up) intermediate (for the computer), bifocals and progressives (used to correct both near and far vision). We sell eyeglasses, contact lenses and prescription sunglasses. Eyeglass Lenses come in different materials. There are plastic, polycarbonate and high index plastic. For regular plastic: It is a very lightweight and durable material which works well for low strength prescriptions. Plastic lenses are the cheapest and usually they are covered by most insurance providers. Always consult with your optician so that you can get an approximate idea of what you are getting before ordering. For Polycarbonate (polycarb or poly): This is a shatterproof material – polycarbonate lenses have become the must for safety eyeglasses, rimless eyeglasses, sports goggles and children's eyewear. It is also good to have in a semi-rimless frame. The price of polycarb lenses is more expensive but worth it. For high index: This is the material for higher strength prescriptions. High index lenses are a must for people with high myopia. Thin eyeglasses are thought to be more attractive than thicker ones. Light eyeglasses are comfortable; heavy ones are not. It is no surprise then that most people want the thinnest, lightest eyeglasses that they can find. These are the most expensive lenses. Finally, there are cosmetic additions that you can make to your lenses to make them more fashionable: Anti-glare coating: Anti-glare coatings are applied to the surface of glasses to prevent or reduce the effect of glare when seeing under certain light conditions. They help you to see better by reducing extra light. This is highly recommended for night drivers and for people who work a lot with computers. Transition (photochromic or photochromatic) lenses are lenses that go dark in sunlight and become lighter in daytime. You could also add a fashion tint to your eyeglasses. In case you are doing prescription sunglasses there two types of lenses you could do. First is a regular tint and second is a polarized lens. Polarized lenses are used in sunglasses to reduce glare from reflective surfaces like the surface of water or the hood of a car. After you decided what kind of lenses you are putting in your eyeglasses or sunglasses just wait for your glasses to be prepared in our on-site laboratory by a NY State licensed optician. We provide same day service at our Church Avenue location in Brooklyn. As for Downtown Manhattan optical and 2849 W 8th St optical most lenses will be ready for pickup within 48 hours. Once you pick up your eyeglasses or sunglasses, they will be properly adjusted by our experienced optician. Thank you for shopping at My Optician – Enjoy!
